Overview
Government Realized Price is the volume-weighted average acquisition cost per BTC across all tracked sovereign entities (e.g. USA, China, Finland, Bhutan, El Salvador). It represents the collective 'entry price' of government-held Bitcoin.
Interpretation
- Below spot price: Governments are collectively in profit on their Bitcoin holdings
- Above spot price: Governments are underwater — political pressure to sell may increase
- Governments often acquire BTC through confiscation (at zero cost) or strategic purchase programs, leading to very different cost bases
Use Cases
- Comparing government realized price to public/private companies to gauge which sector bought better
- Tracking the aggregate cost basis of sovereign Bitcoin reserves
- Assessing political risk: governments underwater on BTC may face pressure to liquidate
