Overview
DAT BTC Holdings tracks the total amount of Bitcoin held by all monitored institutional entities, including public companies, private companies, governments, and other organizations. This is the broadest measure of institutional and sovereign Bitcoin adoption.
Formula
Where is the number of tracked entities and is the latest reported BTC balance for entity .
Interpretation
- Rising total: More entities are accumulating Bitcoin or existing holders are adding to positions. Bullish signal for long-term supply dynamics.
- Falling total: Entities are reducing holdings — could signal profit-taking, regulatory pressure, or strategic reallocation.
- Accelerating growth: If the rate of institutional accumulation increases, it can create significant supply pressure, especially when combined with ETF inflows.
- Divergence from price: If institutional holdings grow while price drops, institutions are accumulating at lower prices (conviction buying).
Use Cases
- Supply absorption analysis: Compare institutional accumulation rate vs new BTC issuance (mining) to assess net supply pressure.
- Institutional adoption tracking: Monitor the trend of institutional Bitcoin adoption over time.
- Macro correlation: Analyze whether institutional treasury strategies correlate with interest rate cycles, USD weakness, or inflation expectations.
- Market structure: Combined with ETF holdings, provides a complete picture of institutional Bitcoin demand.
