Overview

Total ETF AUM (Assets Under Management) represents the combined USD value of all Bitcoin held across every tracked ETF product. It is a function of both the quantity of BTC held and the prevailing market price, making it a comprehensive measure of the total capital deployed through ETF wrappers. Unlike Total BTC Holdings, which measures only volume, AUM captures the dollar-denominated economic exposure. This metric is widely used by institutional analysts and financial media as the headline figure for Bitcoin ETF adoption.

AUM data is sourced from each fund's official daily NAV report. Blocklens aggregates AUM across 27 Bitcoin ETF products spanning US and international markets.

Formula

Total ETF AUM=i=1Naumi\text{Total ETF AUM} = \sum_{i=1}^{N} \text{aum}_i

where aumi\text{aum}_i is the reported net asset value of ETF ii. Note that AUM = btc_holdings * NAV-derived price, so it may differ slightly from btc_holdings * spot_price due to premium/discount dynamics.

Interpretation

  • Rising AUM can be driven by new inflows (more BTC purchased) OR by price appreciation of existing holdings. Decompose by comparing with Total BTC Holdings.
  • AUM growing faster than BTC price means net new capital is entering through ETFs — a strong bullish signal.
  • AUM growing slower than BTC price (or declining despite rising price) indicates net outflows — existing holders are redeeming shares even as price rises.
  • AUM milestones (e.g., $100B total) generate significant media attention and can attract momentum-driven inflows.

Use Cases

  • Capital flow analysis: Track the total institutional capital commitment to Bitcoin through regulated wrappers.
  • Media and reporting: AUM is the most widely cited metric for Bitcoin ETF adoption in financial media.
  • Competitive analysis: Compare against gold ETF AUM (~$250B) to gauge Bitcoin's progress in the institutional allocation landscape.
  • Portfolio allocation signals: Large AUM growth can signal increasing institutional portfolio allocations to Bitcoin.
