Overview

US Spot ETF Daily Net Flow (USD) is the dollar value of shares created minus shares redeemed across the US spot Bitcoin ETFs (IBIT, FBTC, BITB, ARKB, BTCO, EZBC, BRRR, HODL, BTCW, GBTC, Grayscale Mini, MSBT) on each trading day. It is the number usually reported as "ETF flows" in the news: how much new investor money entered or left the funds that day.

Creations and redemptions are executed by authorised participants. A net creation means BTC had to be acquired and delivered to the funds; a net redemption means BTC left them. The USD flow therefore measures investor demand for spot Bitcoin exposure through regulated US products, expressed in the currency investors actually commit.

Formula

Flowt=∑f∈US spot(Sf,t−Sf,t−1)×NAVf,t\text{Flow}_{t} = \sum_{f \in \text{US spot}} (S_{f,t} - S_{f,t-1}) \times \text{NAV}_{f,t}

  • Sf,tS_{f,t} — shares outstanding of fund ff after trading day tt (creations and redemptions of day tt included)
  • NAVf,t\text{NAV}_{f,t} — the fund's own net asset value per share struck on day tt
  • The date is the trade date. Issuers publish some funds a day later; the newest day can be partial until every fund has reported.

Difference from the BTC flow

ETF Daily Net Flow (BTC) is the change in BTC held. The two differ because sponsor fees of some trusts (GBTC 1.5%, Mini, BTCW) are paid in BTC: the coin count falls every day without any investor redemption. The USD flow counts only investor creations and redemptions, valued at each fund's NAV.

Interpretation

  • Positive values: net new money entered US spot ETFs that day; authorised participants acquired BTC to create shares.
  • Negative values: net redemptions; the funds sold or delivered BTC back to the market.
  • Flow streaks: several consecutive days of inflows (or outflows) signal persistent institutional demand (or de-risking) rather than one-off rebalancing.
  • Size relative to price moves: large inflows during flat or falling prices point to accumulation; outflows into rallies point to profit-taking.
  • Zero or near-zero days: often holidays, half-days or days when some issuers have not yet reported — check the next update before drawing conclusions.

Use Cases

  • Institutional demand tracking: the headline daily gauge of capital moving into or out of spot Bitcoin ETFs.
  • Supply-demand modelling: convert to BTC at the day's price and compare with daily mining issuance (~450 BTC).
  • Fund-level attribution: break the total down with ETF Net Flow USD (Per Fund) to see which issuers drive the move.
  • Trend confirmation: compare cumulative flows with price to confirm or question a trend.
